How To Use The Predictor
First of all we just want to say thank you for subscribing. We think you will find the Predictor is the best cheatsheet generator on the market - and for good reason! It does a lot. But there is some information that will help you get the most from it.
General Info
We suggest you use one of the pre-defined searches first, to get an idea of how the Predictor works. To clear the selection boxes at any time, you can simply check and uncheck a predefined search. Obviously(!) the Playoff search does not work during the regular season.
If you do a large search (i.e. ALL, unfiltered) the data will take a few minutes to load. Please be patient.
Once you have your cheatsheet you can play with it. To sort by a column, just click on the header for each column. You can sort in both ascending and descending order (just click again to reverse). If you need a definition for a stat abbreviation, see our glossary. Ranking is the default search (if selected), followed by points (any time ranking isn't selected).
Skater Cheatsheets:
Most of this stuff should be quite intuitive, but the ranking system is unique. This was the key reason that we wanted to create an online cheatsheet.
The ranking feature takes only the categories you choose (and only the players you choose) and ranks the players based on all of those categories. So, for instance, if you use the standard categories, you’ll see that Marty St Louis is not ranked as high as you might expect. Now do the same ranking, but without PIMs. Ah hah! The lesson here is to be careful what stats you are including when you are using the ranking feature.
If you choose ranking as a category, the Predictor will use it as the default category for sorting. So you may see a player with less point, ahead of a player with more. Of course, this is exactly why we developed the system...so you can get an accurate ranking and not be deceived by things like points!
Other Known Issues:
If you choose all the categories please be aware that you could run into some serious problems when printing. We suggest that you run a print preview to see how things will work for you and don't include any columns you don't need. Landscape printing will obviously lead to better results.
We are working on a solution to the absence of the column headers on all but the first page when printing. And remember - if you request and print the entire list it will take a long time to generate, and will likely be about 30 pages long!
Goalie Cheatsheets:
Goalies are odd ducks. Anyone who knows hockey knows this. So for Goalies we developed a rating function based on an exclusive Puckjunkie formula. And no, we don't give it out! Suffice it to say that we have tested it extensively and we think it is reflective of how goalies should be ranked. Obviously, if your league only counts wins though, choose the guy with the most predicted wins!
Playoffs
If you want to get decent predictions you will need to take the time to enter in your projected games played for each team. We didn't predict these because there are so many different things that can happen in the playoffs, and so many different types of pools (round by round for example). And one upset and all the projections are out the window.
The most important thing about a playoff pool is picking the right teams...you should do that part yourself. We know the players - you pick the teams.
Once you do that, click submit (the default entry is one game - if you don't enter a number of predicted games, you will get the predicted stats per game).
One thing to remember is if you want playoff predictions make sure that "playoffs" is selected on the "Pre-Defined Searches" section (we have automatically done this for you - don't unselect it). If not, you'll get regular season projections.
Other than that it's dead easy. You just sort for each category by click on the heading.
We haven't predicted goalies for playoffs. The only valuable stat for goalies in the playoffs is wins - pick starting goalies from teams you expect to go deep in the playoffs and you should be ok. Provided they win of course!
