Expansion Draft Trades & Analysis

MINNESOTA

Trade Mike Vernon to Calgary for center Dan Cavanaugh and an eighth-round pick in 2000 entry draft

  • Cavanaugh is at least a few years away from having any pool impact. As for Vernon, he can provide some veteran leadership in a Flames net  where they played more musical chairs than hockey last year. The real question?   How is Calgary going to afford him. Vernon is a few years past having much fantasy hockey impact.

Trade Chris Terreri to New Jersey for defenseman Brad Bombardir

  • Terreri is a capable back-up, but little else. His stats will certainly not suffer from staying with the Devils though. Bombadir was never a stand out with the Devils, but on a thin blue line, he may see some time on the powerplay. We have to ask though - if this guy could be -4 on the defensively sound Devils, how low could he sink with what will surely be a porous Wild crew?

Trade Joe Juneau to Phoenix Coyotes for center Rickard Wallin

  • Juneau gives the Coyotes some veteran depth at center and a good play maker to add to an offensive unit that was hit and miss all season. His best years are behind him though - don't look for much more than 40 points from the oft-injured Juneau. Wallin was buried deep on Phoenix's prospect list at center. He is young and talented, and my get a shot with the Wild, who will be looking for anything in the form of offence. As with any expansion team player though, don't look for much in the first few seasons.

COLUMBUS

Trade Turner Stevenson to New Jersey as the future considerations to complete the earlier trade for right wing Krzyzstof Oliwa and the rights to defenseman Deron Quint

  • Stevenson will fit in well on the Devils, though it is hard to see him being anything more than a 3rd liner. Despite moving from the offensively challenged Canadiens, don't look for him to break his career high of 27 points. Oliwa adds a lot of toughness to Columbus, but not much in the way of scoring. A pick-up maybe if you are looking for penalty minutes. Quint has lost a little of his shine as an up and coming offensive defenseman, but will get every chance to resurrect his career with the Blue Jackets. Still, be surprised if he does better than 25 points.

Received Jean-Luc Grand Pierre and Matt Davidson from Buffalo for taking Dwayne Roloson and Geoff Sanderson instead of center Stu Barnes.

  • We love this trade for the Blue Jackets. They get a solid back-up in Roloson and a quality forward in Sanderson. Roloson is not a fantasy hockey concern, though may get moved somewhere where he could make a difference. Sanderson is likely to stick in Columbus, where they will be looking for him to regain some of the form that saw him have back to back 40 goals seasons. it's unlikely that he will ever reach that mark again, but 20 goals and 20 points certainly isn't out of the question on a team where he will certainly get a shot at the first line. But the best part of this deal is Grand Pierre. Young, cheap, big and strong, he has all the makings of a fine two way defenseman. He may not light the lamp a lot the first year, but he certainly has potential for 20 points, and a chance to play the powerplay. Good growth potential too. As for Davidson, he's spent his entire career in the minors, and seems a long shot to make the team. That said, he has shown some ability to put the puck in the net, and is still young enough not to write off. Wait and see if he makes the team though.
