Our first rant...but not likely our last. Protecting Albelin is beyond comprehension. He's 36 years old and his best years are well behind him. The Flames would have been better off either protecting a young d-man like Sorochan or exposing Housely, Albelin, and a couple of forwards and hanging on to Giguere. Not protecting Kriovkrasov may be a surprise to some, but his poor defensive play and his inconsistent offense make him hard to stomach sometimes. We thought that they may hang on to Benoit Gratton or Martin St. Louis, but they liked the veteran influence of Bill Lindsay.

The big surprise really wasn't who they exposed, but instead who they kept. Sandy McCarthy is no the same player he was in Philly and Calgary. At $800,000 he isn't exactly cheap. But for some reason Jim Rutherford decided he was a keeper. It's possible that he thinks the expansion clubs will pass on Robert Kron's pricetag, because would have seemed a more logical choice for protection.

Curtis Leschyshyn ($1.8 million) - The pricetag is steep, but there is really no quality at the lower dollar values.
