WOW…first day of trade deadline week and two rather HUGE deals. But
just because Selanne and Khabibulin are in new zip codes, don’t for one
second think that the wheeling and dealing is over. Here’s the latest as
of Monday March 5, 2001:
Atlanta: We
reported yesterday that the Flyers may be interested in a Boucher for
Audette deal. Well, add the Dallas Stars to the mix of teams eyeing the
off-season UFA Audette. With the latest injury to Joe Nieuwendyk, the
Stars may try and add some scoring depth.
Fantasy Impact: This is bad news if you are have Audette in a
regular season pool. Stars coach Hitchcock lives and dies by his teams –
"defense first" style. Audette is receiving loads of ice time
right now, but his play will never be mistaken for a Selke candidate. If
he is moved to Dallas, expect a dip in his stats.
Buffalo: Yesterday we reported that a
Canucks – Sabres deal for Mike Peca was being bandied about…well add
the , Blues and Flames to the Mike Peca saga. Calgary Sun beat writer Mark
Miller reports Flames general manager Craig Button plans on talking trade
at this week's GM's meeting. Button hinted that a major trade, possibly
for Buffalo Sabres unsigned free agent could be in the works. "When
you are talking of a player of the caliber of Mike Peca, we know he would
enhance or team," said Button. "You have to be open to any or
all possibilities and I am." Possible players headed the other way
include Val Bure and/or Phil Housley.
Fantasy Impact: Bure is itching to get out of Cowtown. He and coach
Don Hay are not even in the same library let alone the same book. A change
of scenery could be beneficial for all involved. Look for Bure to really
explode if he is dealt. With Housley, the classy veteran has surprised all
pundits who thought bringing him in to Calgary three years ago was crazy
– but he proved us wrong. He has gone on record hinting that he would
waive his no trade clause if dealing him would improve the Flames. Other
landing spots for Housely if he isn't dealt back to Buffalo include the
Canucks, Leafs, Senators, Blues and Devils.
Detroit: The Detroit Red Wings are
rumored to have interest in underachieving Adam Graves.
Fantasy Impact: If the Wings get Graves…its just another savvy
veteran for the playoff run – although we wonder what Graves tired body
could contribute? If the Rangers were able to off load Graves’ contract
– Slats would look like a hero. We think this deal gets done soon.
New York Rangers: How much more can
Sather watch without pulling off more deals? We don't think too much
longer. Rumor has him fielding calls for stay at home defenceman Rich
Pilon. Possible landing spots are the Senators, Blues and Red Wings.
Fantasy Impact: Not a lot as Pilon’s job is to prevent goals.
However, if you playoff pool counts hits and plus/minus, Pilon would be a
fine addition.
