Rumours du Jour - March

The one thing you will notice with rumours is that they never seem to disappear. Most times they are merely column-fillers for writers who have nothing better to report. What we try to do at Puckjunkie is evaluate what's been rumoured and assess the fantasy impacts.

St. Louis: A number of sources are reporting that St. Louis offered a straignt up Lindros for Turgeon deal.

Fantasy Impact: This deal could have long-ranging impacts on both teams. Lindros could be just the center the Blues need to compete in the Western Conference - tough, fast and skilled. Assuming he could stay healthy this would be the kind of deal that moved St. Louis to the Western Conference final. For the Flyers this is the type of deal that could put them over the top. While obtaining Tkachuk would be a top priority pairing Turgeon and Leclair would be a nice complement to Primeau - Recchi combo. Throw Simon Gagne into the mix and you have a team that could go far come playoff time. As you finish off your regular season leagues don't expect much out of Lindros if he does get traded. He will need time to get in game shape and the concentration will be on making sure he stays healthy for the playoffs. As for Turgeon, he would likely play on the 2nd line in Philadelphia and wouldn't have much in the way of linemates until John Leclair or Simon Gagne returned from injuries. This would definitely be a deal that would benefit playoff poolies though.

Edmonton: Word out of Edmonton has teams banging on the door for a shot at Tom Poti or Sean Brown. The Oilers are desperately in need of another scoring threat for the 2nd line and are listening to offers. While they likely wouldn't get as much for Brown, his value is high because there aren't many rugged d-men available this time of year.

Fantasy Impact: The Blues are rumoured to be very interested in Brown. He's a rough and tumble player and his most valuable stat would likely be PIMs. As for Poti, a change of scenery could mean top powerplay time. Watch this situation closely. A move to a playoff team like St. Louis or Toronto could (and based on how the Oilers are playing right now we emphasize could) extend his playoff life.

New York Islanders: Latest buzz from Long Island has GM Mike Milbury giving an audition to blacklisted coach Ted Nolan. If Nolan passes and becomes the Isles next coach, this could facilitate a Peca trade to the Island. Sabres scouts are reportedly looking at the Polish Rifle Marius Czerkawski and Zdeno Chara of late.

Fantasy Impact: We truly believe that when the trade deadline comes and goes this Tuesday that unless the Sabres receive an unbelievable package for Peca, he is not going anywhere. A package like Czerkawski and Chara would be attractive for the offensively challenged Sabres, but like we have said before, not many GMs – if any – are going to be willing to pay Peca what he is looking for. Of all the rumored deals out there, this deal seems almost do-able. Czerkawski would like out of Long Island, but would actually have to play defence in Buffalo and that will dip into his offensive stats. Peca’s impact would be more long term, as the Isles would get a bona fide leader in their clubhouse.

Vancouver: On the heels of the Peca rumors, Canucks’ GM Brian Burke would love to get his hands on Mike Peca, he just can’t afford him. That said, he is now said to be turning his sights on the Islanders Dave Scatchard. The Canucks need a gritty two-way centerman and the one time Canucks, Scatchard would really fit the bill.

Fantasy Impact: We are sure that Burke and Milbury have had discussions re: Dave Scatchard, and Burke has been likely surprised to find out that the asking price is pretty high – almost Peca like. All teams in the NHL need a guy like this, which makes it tough to think that the Isles are going to give him up for a rumored package of Matt Cooke, Steve Kariya and a draft pick. Remember that it was Burke that moved both Scatchard and Bill Muckalt to the Islanders for Felix Potvin. No GM likes to be reminded of the deals that he should not have made by taking a player back but the Canucks may have no choice in this case.

Phoenix: Rumors are swirling that the Blues are willing to part with Jochan Hecht, Daniel Corso and a future first round pick for Tkachuk.

Fantasy Impact: Pick a team…any team … and there is a rumored offer for the services of either Keith Tkachuk or Jeremy Roenick. We are sticking to our guns in that we think that it's very unlikely that Tkachuk or Roenick will be moved by Tuesday – in the off-season, maybe. The ‘Yotes are in a dogfight for a playoff spot, and Roenick and Tkachuk are the players that will allow them to get one. The Blues offer is not bad, but that deal would not help Phoenix scratch out a playoff spot.  Short term, Tkachuk has an immediate impact on the Blues – he'd be happy there, probably playing with Pierre Turgeon. The ‘Yotes won’t make the playoffs if this deal happens. Hecht will help and Corso looks to be a good player – but in all likelihood this deal isn't enough to help this year. New ownership in the desert needs the extra revenue form making the playoffs – plain and simple. Tkachuk helps them do that. But come July – Tkachuk needs to put a "for sale" sign on his house because it's pretty much a lock that he'll be on his way out of town.
