Expansion Draft

Significant Transactions

TO: LOS ANGELES KINGS

TO: VANCOUVER CANUCKS

February 15, 2001
  • Felix Potvin

  • Future Considerations
Analysis: This is a gift for the Canucks. They managed to find a team willing to take on Potvin's remaining salary (about $800,000). Canuck GM Brian Burke feels that between the money he saves on this deal and the Cloutier deal (Aucoin makes more that Cloutier) he should be able to make an acquisition at the deadline to help the Canuck's run to the playoffs.

TO: ATLANTA THRASHERS

TO: ANAHEIM MIGHTY DUCKS

February 9, 2001
  • Ladilsav Kohn

  • Sergei Vyshedkevich
  • Scott Langkow
Analysis: Langkow was projected as a top goaltending prospect when he was in the Phoenix organization. There were many who believed that he would get his big break when he was picked up in the expansion draft by the Thrashers. But he never managed to prove himself and the emergence of Hnlicka in Atlanta made Langkow's role more insignificant. Kohn, has all the tools, but he just hasn't developed into a top line player like the Ducks thought he would when they acquired him from Toronto. Look for him to get plenty of opportunity on the skill-deficient Thrashers. He will probably see his fair share of powerplay time and be given every opportunity to make the 2nd line.

TO: VANCOUVER CANUCKS

TO: TAMPA BAY LIGHTNING

February 7, 2001
  • Dan Cloutier

  • Adrian Aucoin
  • 2nd Round Draft Pick
Analysis: Vancouver GM Brian Burke didn't have much choice here. He had to pick up a goalie and he didn't have much money to spend. Cloutier makes the most sense. The irony here is that Tampa GM Rick Dudley please that former Canuck cast-off Kevin Weekes is his starter thus allowing him to trade Cloutier. Short term, don't look for Cloutier to play much more than half-time as Essensa has being playing well. For next season, look for coach Crawford to work him in to at least three quarters of the games. As for Aucoin, his stock has been falling for a couple of years. His banishment to Tampa Bay will not help matters. He will see plenty of powerplay time but his +/- will suffer tremendously.

TO: DALLAS STARS

TO: NEW YORK RANGERS

February 5, 2001
  • John Maclean

  • Future Considerations
Analysis: Maclean isn't going to light the lamp, but he should get some playing time with the Stars. As well, he will be an excellent role player come playoff time. Don't look for much production until the post-season, where he could pleasantly surprise.
