Expansion Draft

Significant Transactions

TO: ANAHEIM MIGHTY DUCKS

TO: BOSTON BRUINS

November 18
  • Sami Pahlsson (C)

  • Andrei Nazarov (LW)
  • Patrick Traverse (D)
Analysis: Neither Nazarov or Traverse have done much in their careers and both were picked up by Anaheim for a song. Nazarov came with a 2nd round pick for young d-man Jordan Leopold. While Leopold may be a good one he is still 2 or 3 years away. As for Traverse, he was acquired prior to the expansion draft for next to nothing. As for Pahlsson he has tons of upside. He was acquired by Boston from Colorado in the famous Bourque deal along with Brian Rolston and Martin Grenier. He played last season with the Sedin twins in Sweden and has oodles of talent. In the very short term this deal may address Mike Keenan's needs in Boston, but this could be a long term disaster. For the Ducks it was a deal they couldn't refuse. Neither Nazarov or Traverse cost them anything significant to acquire so why not take a chance?

TO: EDMONTON OILERS

TO: BOSTON BRUINS

November 15
  • Anson Carter (C/RW)
  • 2nd Round Draft Pick
  • Bill Guerin
Analysis: This is really a win-win deal. The Bruins finally get an extra body in their lineup and Guerin is capable of 30+ goals. The Oilers get younger, cheaper but unlike most Oiler deals they get a very talented player who can help them right now. Only one thing to watch - if the Oilers push Carter into service before he's fully in shape you may see him on the M.A.S.H list with a groin strain in a week or so.

Note: There may be a lot of people out there that will look at this and say that the Bruins "took'em". But we would say that they should look more closely. In Carter's three full seasons his Goals/Game (G/G) were .21, .44 and .37 and his Points/Game (P/G) were .55, .73 and .80. In Guerin's last three season he has had G/G averages of .31, .38, .34 and P/G averages of .66, .80, and .68.

Conclusion: If Carter can stay healthy the Oilers should be smiling and so should all of you with him on your team.

TO: COLUMBUS BLUE JACKETS

TO: New York Rangers

November 10
  • Jean-Francois Labbe (G)
  • Bert Robertsson
Analysis: Not an Earth-shattering deal by any stretch but interesting nonetheless. The Rangers had no need for Labbe after signing Johan Holmqvist and Vitali Yeremyev (both stars in Europe) in the off-season. Getting Robertsson is a good move from a versatility standpoint. He is capable of playing both wing and defense. This year more than any in the past has been marked by d-men playing the wing (Dandenault, Eric Messier, Heward, Phillips, and Staois just to name a few). Neither player should have much of an impact from a fantasy perspective.
