TO: CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS

October 5
  • Stephane Quintal (waivers)
  • Cash and/or Future considerations
  • Michal Grosek
  • Brad Brown
Analysis: What can we say that we haven't said already? This deal makes no sense. From a fantasy perspective Grosek will probably play on the 3rd line, get some 2nd unit PP time and probably score 20 goals. Brown will be asked to clear the net, get in a few scraps and as a result will probably on help your team in PIMs. As for Quintal? Sather more or less said he was done. Obviously Mike Smith doesn't think so. And who you gonna believe? A guy with a fistful of Stanley Cup rings or a guy with a penchant for Russians who wanted to "out ego" Ken Dryden. At best Quintal will put up 15-20 points and if he gets back to his aggressive self, he could hit 150 PIMs. Don't look for much else.

TO: TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS

TO: CHICAGO BLACKHAWKS

October 2
  • Bryan McCabe
  • Alexander Karpovtsev
  • 4th Round Draft Pick
Analysis: This deal has been rumoured for weeks but to be honest there were few outside Toronto who honestly believed it would happen. Karpovtsev is a pretty good d-man who can put up adequate offensive stats and knows where his own end is but he doesn't have the upside of McCabe. The former Hawk, Canuck and Islander is a solid defender, a big hitter, and not afraid to drop the gloves. As well, he has shown glimpses of being able to develop an offensive game. Karpovtsev is three years older than McCabe. Let's be honest Pat Quinn took advantage of what he knows is Mike Smith's one weakness...his obsession with Russian hockey players. Really there's no other reason for the deal. Look for McCabe to flourish in TO offensively, defensively and physically. As for Karpovtsev he'll get 2nd unit PP time in Chicago and get a regular shift. He's not really in a position to take anyone's job and should occupy the 4th d-man job. As for McCabe, he will take the spot Karpovtsev occupied on the PP last year. The only guy who could be in jeopardy would be Gerald Diduck and he's not really a fantasy force.
