Trade Deadline Closeup - The Battle of Alberta

March 8, 2001

With a playoff appearance looking more secure for the resurgent Oilers and fading fast for the struggling Flames, the looming trade deadline will certainly be handled differently by the front offices in Edmonton and Calgary.  Look for more action from Calgary.

The Flames: Work in Progress

The Flames showed glimpses this year that they have the makings of a playoff team, perhaps almost a contender. But the Flames puzzle is still missing some key pieces that a few good trades might solve.  One name oft mentioned is Buffalo's RFA Mike Peca.  But who would Craig Button give up (and can they afford him?). Although Iginla and others have been mentioned – Button is on record as saying no Flame is untouchable – the two most likely trade candidates for this deal or another are Housley and V. Bure.

Who's available:

Player: Phil Housley

Age: 374

Current Team: Calgary Flames

2000/2001 Stats: 4 Goals, 20 Assists, -12, 87 shots (as of March 8)

Want more info? Check out the Phil Housley page on Hockey-Wired

Interested Parties: Toronto, Ottawa, Washington, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Pittsburgh

What he brings to the Dance:  Lots of experience, smart play, smooth passing and a definite upgrade to any team's powerplay.

Long or Short Term Fantasy Potential: Housley has defied most pundit's predictions that he would fall flat on his face when the Flames picked him up three years ago. Housley has thrived in the open style of the Western Conference.  He has stayed relatively healthy, and has put up very respectable 44 and 45 point seasons.  If he is traded his impact will be felt short term, and will really benefit the Leafs or Senators more than the other teams rumored to be after him.  He will be 37 this year – which means he’ll have played 19 years in the NHL – and that’s a lot of miles.  He will have an immediate impact on a playoff bound team, but doesn’t have lots of upside in terms of long term impact, except that Morris gets more quality ice time in Calgary. Talk of potential players going the other way has included Sergei Berezin, Richard Zednik, Bobby Holik, and Martin Havlat. All of those guys must be just dying to get to work on their golf games.

Playoff Implications: The team that lands Housley will hope that he comes with a decent attitude – ready to play and compete.  That was the knock against Phil until recently: he seemed disinterested on the ice at times.  Just not really wanting to play. We predict that wherever he lands, he’ll make a very positive impact immediately.

Player: Valeri Bure

Age: 26

Current Team: Calgary Flames

2000/2001 Stats: 21 Goals, 21 Assists, 12 PPG, 222 shots (as of March 7)

Want more info? Check out the Valerie Bure page on Hockey-Wired

Interested Parties: Bure would love to play with his brother in Florida, but a handful of other teams have also expressed interest - most notably Buffalo.

What he brings to the Dance: What he brings to the Dance: The smallish winger adds some speed, finesse, play-making, goal scoring, and power-play acumen, but his size and lack of grit when the going gets tough has to be taken into account.

Long or Short Term Fantasy Potential: Bure can score, but he can also disappear for games on end. Bure could thrive on a team that boasts some size and power and if he can play with talented linemates. On balance, Bure's production next year on the right team could increase or at least meet his career total of 75 points last year. The Flames would suffer in the goal-scoring department unless the player(s) coming back their way have some offensive flare.

Playoff Implications: Wouldn't be the sole difference between a Stanley Cup and an early trip to the links for his new team, but playing for a contender in the right environment (and perhaps less intense individual pressure to score) he could prove a valuable addition in a playoff pool.c

The Oilers: Can they keep Weight?

After their sixth straight win, the latest coming against Curtis Joseph for the first time since Cujo became a Leaf, the Oilers exuded confidence and Captain Weight actually felt comfortable mentioning a run at the Stanley Cup this year.  Weight is having a career season, and unless the Oilers ownership team digs deep this summer, or the team makes it deep into the playoffs to generate that extra revenue, Weight will be gone this summer.

Does Kevin Lowe keep Weight to ensure a playoff berth and some hope in the playoffs, or does he deal him now in a blockbuster to establish the long-term viability of the franchise if the decision has already been made that the budget isn't there to keep him? At the moment, it seems Weight will remain an Oiler and keep up his career year pace, and lead the Oilers into the playoffs.

Instead, the Oilers defence corps could be mined to get some more scoring or size up front, but don't look for any huge moves that would mess up the chemistry on this team.
