Musings from the
first week of the NHL season from a Fantasy perspective:
-
Mario Lemieux is hurt and it's not his back. Be very skeptical. He's
still going to take at least 10 games off during the season to rest his
back. If he misses a lot of time with this hip injury, we might be lucky
to see 60 games out of him this year.
-
Three broken jaws in one week (Patrik Stefan,
Bret Hedican and
Scott Mellanby). Does the NHL have a new epidemic on it's hands?
Probably not, but if you have any of those three guys be prepared to bench
them for at least a month.
-
Michael Peca is having some early season offensive success with the
Islanders. We don't think it will last. He still a 50 point guy who's an
exceptional checker and penalty killer.
-
After 14 goals against in their
first three games, Vancouver netminders are under attack...again. While we
never recommended taking them to begin the season, don't blame them for
all the problems. The team is struggling defensively. The result? Bad
goaltending numbers and bad +/-.
-
Is Anaheim really this bad?
They've been humiliated on their early season roadswing and if their
current goal output (about 2 goals for per game) remains, owning any Duck
(including
Paul Kariya,
Jeff Friesen or
Oleg Tverdovsky) could cook your Fantasy goose.
