Fantasy musings:
-
How serious is Jaromir
Jagr's injury? He was originally thought to be day-to-day, but at
the announcement of his new MONSTER contract (8 years - $88 million)
it was announced that he is still questionable for the Caps game on
Friday. Be careful over the next couple of weeks with Jagr. Even if he
does come back, he will be playing with a brace.
-
On the topic of
the Caps. They will be without gritty leader Steve
Konowalchuk for 3-4 months. He suffered a severely dislocated
shoulder that required surgery. This will put added pressure on Andrei
Nikolishin defensively and also give Jeff
Halpern a chance to play on a line with Peter
Bondra.
-
Can a coach
really have that kind of effect on players? It sure looks like it.
Since Rick
Kehoe took over as coach of the Pittsburgh Penguins, the team has
transformed. Sure it's only two games, but the team seems to have
clamped down defensively and helped out goaltender Johan
Hedberg. As well, they're managing to put the biscuit in the
basket - even without Alexei
Kovalev (knee injury) or anyone resembling a powerplay
quarterback.
-
So what does the
Islanders, Flames and Canadiens surge mean for Fantasy Hockey? There
will be a lot of overpriced players out there? Is Mark
Parrish an 80 goalscorer? Is Roman
Turek a Vezina winner? Is Brian
Savage going to play 82 games? No, unlikely, and almost certainly
not. But right now, that's how they all look. And Fantasy owners
everywhere will be tempted to pay too much for them...beware.
-
Did you pass up
on Jason
Arnott because he's never scored 68 points in his career? Are you
regretting it now? If this guy stays healthy he's a lock for 80
points. Last year his two linemates ( Patrik
Elias and Petr
Sykora ) had 96 and 81 points respectively - and Sykora only
played in 73 games. In fact last season Arnott was on a point per game
pace. It's just too bad he got started late due to a contract dispute
and missed a few games due to injury.

Martin
Brodeur owners have reason to panic. His primary value has always
been his win total. It's been a while sinces he's had an exceptionally
high SV% (.917 in 97/98) and his GAA, while good, was not among last
season's Top 10. In fact even though Brodeur led the league with 42
wins, he was 22nd in SV% and 13th in GAA. With Halloween around the
corner, the only word we could think of is....scary!
