Backgrounder - Business Editors
4 October 2000
- Puckjunkie.com is the first business to be
launched by Puckjunkie Inc., a privately held company based in Calgary,
Alberta, Canada. Other hockey related businesses are in development.
- Puckjunkie.com targets those thousands of
hockey fans that participate in office pools and particularly Fantasy
Hockey (more advanced hockey pools, sometimes called "roto-hockey")
who demand more than just stats and news. Puckjunkie.com offers unique
analysis, intelligence, and support for Fantasy Hockey GMs, giving them
a winning edge for the entire season.
- In addition, Puckjunkie.com will add
vertically integrated services and products of interest to real hockey
fanatics. However, it is NOT a gaming site and is appropriate for
Puckjunkies of all ages.
- As a dot.com business unit, Puckjunkie.com
reverses the usual trend seen in the dot.com world of the late 1990s
(that is, a rough concept with big upfront expenditures but no
sustainable business model). Puckjunkie.com took over a year to launch,
with a business plan designed to show profitability within the first
fiscal year. Development of the Puckjunkie brand is an intrinsic part of
this process.
- First and foremost a content driven site,
Puckjunkie.com deploys technology in the support of content and customer
needs, not technology for its own sake.
- The business model is flexible, relying on
multiple revenue streams. Access to most of the site will be free and
"sticky", with paid members getting extra services, discounts
on products, participation in contests, etc. Other revenue streams
include advertising, syndication, and selling hockey related products
and services via an integrated e-commerce capability provided by
strategic alliance partner, Shopplex.com Corporation (also of Calgary,
Alberta, Canada).
- Promotion budgets are limited. Marketing
efforts will rely primarily on viral strategies and cross-promotion with
carefully selected partners, with some selective paid advertising. In
addition, syndication and "sole provider" deals to non-hockey
portals will be pursued as a way to increase exposure.
- The directors and officers running
Puckjunkie Inc. bring a wealth of business, consulting, media, and legal
experience to the business, and all are long-time Fantasy Hockey GMs.
